Instagram, for the few of you who haven’t heard of it, is THE preferred social media channel dominating people’s mobile feeds.
A clever Melbourne entrepreneur, Alecia Minster has founded Girl bosses Australia, one of the first Instagram magazines dedicated to helping women connect, learn and grow. She took time out of her day to talk to us about social media, juggling family commitments and her blossoming instagram following.
So, where did the ‘big idea’ come from? Did you have a light bulb moment?
I fell in love with the IG community a few years ago. I had started an Instagram Shop with a girlfriend and my role was marketing, promotions and growing our follower base across all social media channels. Due to my business partners work commitments this store closed earlier this year, but I had learnt so much and I didn’t want that knowledge to go to waste. I had the idea to use my knowledge to help some of the women who had helped me. Girl Bosses Australia was born out of this desire to help others, and it exceeded my expectations ten fold in the first month.
What’s the philosophy behind GirlbossesAU?
Girl Bosses Australia is an Instagram magazine, dedicated to helping women in business connect, learn & grow. I am passionate about helping people succeed and it makes my heart swell when I hear I have made some kind of impact in their journey.
Can you tell us a bit about your business background – what you studied, where you worked?
Some might say I am a jack of all trades, having worked in a variety of different roles in Marketing and sales over the last 20 years. During this time I ran the National Red Nose Day campaign, I also worked for a few seasons on the TV show ‘The Panel’ with the amazing team at Working Dog Productions. But my experience in business and life goes back even further in Advertising and start up internet business when the internet was a novelty and mobile phones where enormous. So you could say I draw from a wide set of skills everyday to deliver the Girl Bosses Australia’s message.
What is it about Instagram that you are drawn to?
I’m a creative at heart – I love to tell a story with a picture, I love the accessibility of the human behind the pictures and overall I find the community I have created AMAZING!
What’s the toughest thing about starting out on your own?
The hardest thing about starting out on your own is doing it on your own! Being a mum of three boys under seven does mean time is a very limited resource, but working from home means I can organise my time efficiently. Eliminating travel time (wasted time) and scheduling time away from my kids definitely helps. It might sound cliche, but having the right attitude is very important. I consider myself a tenacious optimist, in other words I never give up and have an unwavering belief that it will all work out. The risk of failure is just a motivator to work harder – I mean who likes to loose?

This is the easiest question, from my Girl Bosses! They are the ones endeavouring to follow their dreams and their support drives me further.
What are your thoughts on the future of the traditional office space and set 9-5 hrs?
For Girl Bosses, in particular mums, the 9-5 is almost impossible, likewise as your business grows working from home can be difficult when the breakfast dishes or daily washing taunt you while you work.
What do you think of the coworking concept?
I love the coworking concept, a place to share with likeminded people is a dream.
Best moment in business so far?
Hitting 10,000 followers a couple of weeks ago was great, but by far the best part was receiving a thank you letter from a Girl Boss I featured. It was so heartfelt and sincere and it really gave me a boost and hardened my resolve to do the best I can for these women.
What’s the best piece of advice you have received?
“It’s called Social media for a reason, get social” – it’s all about connecting and making your followers know they are appreciated, valued and so important.
